“Stepped” cracks in the brick veneer (where the masonry joint is cracked and continues to proceed up or down the wall - diagonally, much like a step) can also be an indicator of a structural problem or foundation settlement and this can lead to interior damage. If left unchecked - possible structural damage to the home, resulting in large remedial costs can occur. Cost savings can be realized by keeping up the maintenance of the wall system, where open voids in the mortar joints are evident or where moisture is evident on the interior surfaces.
Water can erode any surface, given enough time or volume and the integrity of the wall should be kept watertight. Not only is there energy savings in stopping the drafts and water but also the potential (and much more expensive) remedial costs of repairing the damage.
