CAULKING (OF CONTROL JOINTS) 1. All joints to be treated shall have all existing material, joint backing or other encumbrance which is detrimental to the adhesion of the new sealant, completely removed. The bonding surfaces of the joint shall be ground, using mortar-driven abrasive wheels. The joint will then be made free of all loose particles and dust. 2. Expansion joints shall have all mortar completely removed to the full depth and width of the joint and be made free of any other obstructions that would hinder expansion or contraction of the joint. Polyethylene backer-rod shall then be installed into the void or cavity to be sealed. 3. The polyethylene backer-rod shall be inserted so as to limit the depth of sealant material to allow for a proper sealant/joint shape factor. An approximate two-to-one, width-to-depth ratio will be used to keep cohesive and adhesive stresses of the sealant to a minimum. The compression ratio of the new backer-rod shall be determined as per the manufacturer's guidelines for same, as per the joint design. 4. The bonding surfaces shall be sealed and primed with the appropriate agent as per manufacturer recommendations, so as to completely coat these surfaces. The substrate at both sides of the openings shall be protected from an overlay of new sealant by masking the sides with tape, as required. Upon completion of tooling the new material, the tape shall be removed and any excess cleaned from the adjoining surfaces. 5. The sealant shall be applied using a hand-pressure gun and applied in such a manner so as to disallow any air pockets from entering the sealant material and the joint tooled to assure full contact to both sides of the bonding surfaces and a neat uniform bead. |
