CUTTING OUT OF DETERIORATED JOINTING


1. Cut out all deteriorated joints to the full height of the joint and to a minimum depth of one inch.

2. Deteriorated joints are defined as having: a) loose or missing mortar; b) excessively soft mortar; c) powdery or crumbling mortar; and d) cracks that weaken the bond between units or voids.

3. Remove metal fittings such as nails, brackets, clips and the like from wall areas as cutting out proceeds.

4. Do not cut out sound adjacent joints. Leave in their present state.

5. Areas of jointing which were previously re-pointed with a hard cement and sand mix will be treated as defective jointing and cut out.

6. Cut out fine joints not more than 2½ times the width, in order to reduce the danger of chipping of masonry edges.

7. All cutting out is to be done by skilled mechanics under the direction of a competent mason experienced in this type of work.

8. All cutting out of joints is to be done with hammer and chisel or appropriate abrasive means.
